The current study aimed to present a proposed model for institutionalization of
Service Learning in higher education in Oman. The proposed model was based on the study of three models: Bringle and Hatcher CAPSAL model, Furco's rubric and Holland's matrix for commitment to Service (Bringle & Hatcher, 1996; Furco, 2002; Holland, 1997)The study aimed to answer the following research question:
1. What is the Proposed model for Institutionalization of Service Learning in
Higher Education in Oman? This study used Delphi method. Nine faculty members, who have practical
experience in establishing Service learning program in their campus, along with four educational experts reviewed, edited and commented on and report recommendations through two multi stages modified Delphi process. A check list was built for the final model and was used to interview nine Higher Education decision makers to determine
that the proposed model is compatible with Omani educational policies, philosophy and culture.
This study resulted a proposed model that works as a step by step guide to
introduce, implement and sustain service learning at the institutional level for Omani Higher Education Institutions. The model consisted of five main dimension: Service Learning Philosophy, Institution, faculty, students and Community. The model included a suggested number of stages, activities and successes indicators for each dimension.
The findings of this study showed that Institutionalization of Service Learning in higher
education as a practical practice might be a positive step towards higher educational reform in Oman. The findings also showed that Service Learning promotes higher education role in promoting positive citizenship. The study suggested number of recommendations.
