The study aimed to achieve planning indicators that may contribute to develop social care services of the elderly people in the Sultanate of Oman. The indicators had been determined through: services provided for the elderly, the most prominent needs, and the most important impediments that hinder the benefit of services provided to elderly. The current study belongs to descriptive studies based on a social survey on a sample consists of: 142 elderly from Muscat Governorate, and six experts in the field of elderly care. The data collection tools of the study were designed by the researcher and it includes: a questionnaire for elderly, and an interview with experts.
The study reached to some important indicators related to welfare services of elderly as follows: there is a need for more expansion of various services of the elderly in the Omani society, the development of awareness of the elderly about available services, improving the mechanisms of the announcement of services provided to the elderly, developing follow-up and evaluation mechanisms of the elderly services provided by welfare institutions, improving the economic services as well as social services of elderly, and the readiness to expected impacts of social change on the Omani family. The study concluded some recommendations and mechanisms that can improve the services provided to the elderly. The most important of these recommendations are: elderly care within their family, and to promote the support of government and private institutions for families that take care of the aged people, and enabling families to provide ultimate care for elderly.
