This study aimed at determining the effect of using Concept Mapping on the achievement and retention of the concepts related to the unit of Classification of the Organisms; assigned to the tenth-grade students in the Sultanate of Oman. The Sample consisted of (136) female Students in four Biology Classes who were distributed in to two groups : The Experimental group which was taught by concept mapping method, and it was consisted of (69) students. The second group was the controlled group which was taught by conventional method, and it was consisted of (67) students. . A 39 - item multiple choice test was constructed covering three topics : Kingdom Monera , Kingdom Protesta , and Kingdom Fungi .
The validity of the test was conducted through a panel of expert judges in Biology and Science Education . Reliability for external consistency of the test was calculated using the Cronbach - Alpha method and it was (0.87). The Statistical analysis of the post-test showed there were significant differences between the groups at (a = 0.05) due to the treatment in favor of the concept mapping method and the statistical analysis of the retention-test showed there were significant differences between the groups at (a=0.05) also in favor of the concept mapping method. The results assured that concept mapping did help students in this study in remembering and assimilating biology information. Finally, some recommendations have been offered in this study as follow: conducting such programs to train teachers adopting concept mapping method, as both an instructional and assessment tool, and conducting studies on other scientific topics and other variables related to concept mapping
