This study aimed at identifying the types of crisis confronted by the headmasters and their assistants in preparatory and secondary schools in Oman , and the procedures applied in handling such crisis. It also aimed to determine whether there were any statistically significant differences among the respondents according to their job titles, gender, teaching cycle experience and educational districts. The study concluded with providing some suggestions to develop crisis management. In order to achieve the above aims, the educational literature related to the crisis management was analysed. Also, a questionnaire of 66 statements was designed.
The reliability and validity of the questionnaire were also checked. The sample for this study comprises 178 headmasters of preparatory and secondary schools in Oman and 230 of their assistants. The data gathered from the questionnaire were analysed by applying the frequencies, means , standard deviation, ranking, T test and ANOVA and Sciheffe. The results of the field study were as follows: The estimations given by the respondents (the headmasters and their assistants) to the five categories of the crisis types and their management procedures ranged between average and below average where crisis related to teachers and students, health crisis, utility crisis and natural crisis got the average grade. Regarding the effect of the variables in this study, there was a statistical difference at the level (0.05 = a) between the average of respondents' responses which was attributed to the job title in three dimensions , namely: health crisis, natural crisis, and the strategies used for managing school crisis. There were statistically significant differences among respondents that could be attributed to the educational district . The differences con corn three dimensions : student – teacher relationship, utilities and the procedures. There was no statistically significant differences that could the attributed gender across all dimensions . In light of the releuant literature analysis and the results of the field study, this researcher provides a number of suggestions to develop the management of crisis, inter alias : In addition, the study calls upon further research to be carried out on improving the crisis management in other educational institutions such as Sultan Qaboos University and colleges of education, taking into consideration other variables.
