In many parts of the developing world, ticks and tick-borne diseases are a major constraint for livestock production. In order to determine the importance of ticks in any country, it is necessary to have accurate information about the species that puritize animals in the country. In Oman, very few studies have been carried out to determine the tick species that infest livestock. In order to contribute to efforts aimed at addressing this city of information this study was conducted to determine the species of ticks that infest livestock in Oman, as well as the host association and geographical distribution of the species of ticks found
A tick survey was carried out in two areas in Oman, Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar and Dhofar region. The two areas are geographically separated and differ in their climate. Ticks were collected from goats and shop at LS locations in Al Jabal Al-Akhdar and from cattle and camels at nine locations in Dhofar region. The geographical coordinates of cach location were recorded and later plotted. Collected ticks were identified using published morphological keys.
A total of 338 tick collections were made from outs, shop, cattle and camels. One thousand, two hundred and seventeen (1,217) adult ticks and immatures were collected from 173 goals and 344 ticks from 84 sheep in Al Jabal Al-Akhdar, while in Dhofar region 838 and 644 adult ticks and immatures were collected from 34 cattle and 47 camels respectively. Five species of ticks, namely Hyalomm (H) anatolicum, H excavatum, H. marginatum, H ipes and Rhipicephales (R) camices were found on goats in Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar while only two species, M. marginal and R. camions were found on sheep in the same area. In Dhofar region, nine species of ticks were found on cattle and these were Ambrog (A wariegatum, Wanatolicum, M. detrim derrum, dromedari, H. exam, imperatum, H. rufipes, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annatus and R camicasi. On camels in the same region, seven species were found, namely: warlega , anatolicum, H. dromedarii, H impeltatum, H. marginatum, H. rufipes and R camcast Five of the ten tick species found in this study infested different species of livestock hosts in the two study areas. These were H. anatolicum, H. excavam, H. marginatum, H. rufipes and R. camicas. These ticks are probably widely distributed in the country.
