The aim of this study is to analyze the attention has been given by the Omani Arabic dailies; Al-Watan, Oman, Shabiba, and Al-Roya for the Syrian crisis. The discourse by these dailies toward the same crisis will be also under analysis and discussion. This study depends on content analysis methodology to analyze all related materials published by the Omani Arabic dailies in 2017, while discourse analysis will cover only the opinion materials published by these dailies in the same period. A total of 1903 materials will be analysed using content analysis. Discourse analysis in this study focuses on opinion articles which reached 246 articles. As a starting point, the researcher will identify the main subjects mentioned and discussed by these articles in relation to the Syrian crisis. Under discourse analysis three analytical styles will be used: analysis of the demonstration tracks, analysis of the references' frameworks, and analysis of the influencing powers.
The study showed various results both in content and discourse analysis. Oman newspaper achieved superiority in the entire space allocated for Syrian crisis, after which came Al-Watan newspaper, then Al-Roya followed by Shabiba newspaper at last. Reports were the most materials type used to address the Syrian crisis in the newspapers under study. The results also showed that Oman newspaper used more of analytical articles, while Al-Watan used column articles, Al-Roya used editorial articles, and Shabiba used only analytical articles to address the Syrian crisis. The results also revealed the dominance of Arab writers in Oman, Al-Watan and Shabiba newspapers regarding articles addressing the Syrian crisis, however Al-Roya newspaper depended only on Omani writers.
Discourse analysis of the Omani Arabic dailies under this study revealed several main topics these newspapers focused on, such as Astana negotiations, international intervention in the Syrian crisis, and the future of the crisis. The most significant demonstration tracks represented the challenges faced the Astana negotiations to reach a political settlement, the international conspiracy for destroying and dividing Syria, and the indicators of the Syrian conflict. The most significant references frameworks the Omani Arabic dailies discourse based on were historical, humanitarian, financial, moral, and legal frameworks. The discourse of the studied newspapers in this study showed a number of influencing powers including; Turkey, Syrian Regime, Syrian opposition, USA, and Russia.
