In oil and gas industries, monitoring the control network is crucial and challengeable. It is
very important to have a centralized control room to get a clear and real overview of the
plant .Currently, most industries are being controlled by modern control technologies that
are capable of evolution, and a way forward for distributed decisions making such as
Distributed Control System (DCS). DCS is a distributed control system that has various
nodes and I/O devices connected through dedicated network. A major challenge of DCS
is to gather a vast critical data from different systems in one overview, and this is due to
the lack of a common interface between various system components. Therefore, the
Automation Systems Function department at Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) has
designed and developed one dedicated dashboard system called Baseera to tackle this
issue. Baseera is a software that has inter-operability for all various DCS systems used in
PDO. Baseera aims to gather all specific DCS systems data in one dashboard and
introduces these data in a meaningful and statistical aspect. Such data are the date related
to the Safety Instrumented System (SIS) and the Operation Technology (OT) health
dashboards. However, due to the slowness of the dashboards while they are important,
Baseera needs to be improved to solve this issue.
Extraction, Transformation and Loading (ETL) is a layer within Baseera system that can
be used to improve the scan time of the SIS and OT health dashboards. The improvements
need more efforts and investigations from researchers in order to apply some algorithms
in ETL software layers to get the desired performance results. Therefore, the conceptual
structure concept of database design is utilized in this thesis. Moreover, the task scheduler
is used to measure the performance of the new system before and after the improvements
that we have done, mainly in terms of scan time. The results obtained show that in general,
the scan time of SIS dashboard decreased significantly from 30 min to about 22 seconds.
In addition, the scan time of the OT health dashboard decreased by a factor of 6 compared
to the last module before the improvements with an increment in the rate of scan of about
15 times. This work demonstrates that the ETL offers a good solution that can have a
positive impact on the control systems used in the oil and gas industrial business.
