The present study investigates the impact of Qatar crisis on the Omani-Qatari bilateral relations.
The main focus is on the impact of Qatar crisis on Qatar and Oman. The problem statement relies
on the understanding of how Qatar crisis has affected Qatar at present and how it will affect it in
the near future. When Qatar crisis started on June 5, 2017, the Qatari government immediately
decided to react in an esteemed way as it reflects their norms and values. To react positively to the
crisis, they selected a crisis management strategy to change the negative outcome of the crisis to a
positive outcome in Qatar.
This study investigates the challenges faced by Qatar with the neighboring countries who have
taken steps against Qatar, namely UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt and the impact of the
crisis on the Omani Qatari relations. It also explores to identify the sectors, which developed more
during the crisis between Oman and Qatar. To achieve these objectives, this study adopted a
qualitative approach method; semi-structured interviews were conducted with personnel from the
Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oman embassy in Qatar and different ministries and
companies in Oman and Qatar. These interviews were later subjected to thematic analysis.
The findings revealed that crisis management was an effective strategy implemented by the Qatari
government. It helped them change or transfer the negative impacts to positive impacts. The crisis
management strategy encouraged Qatar to rely on their local industries, improve education and
media institutes and use Qatar's soft power at the international level. The majority of respondents
said that the leading causes of Qatar crisis are the Qatar's Foreign Policy, Arab Spring and Media.
The year 2017 was a challenging year for Qatar due to the crisis and it has affected the national
economy although there was a strong growth. The data shows the growth accelerated to 5% GDP
in the second half of 2017. The majority of the respondents said the two sectors, which developed
between Oman and Qatar, during the crisis, are economy and logistics. The primary sources of
data presented in this research are collected through interviews and online surveys, whereas the
secondary sources such as interviews, books, articles, reports and academic research were referred
to.
