The research aimed to study the history of Oman and Zanzibar as documented in
the Omani Arab newspapers that were established in Zanzibar, and highlight their
impacts on the economic, social, and cultural aspects in the period (1911 - 1964).
The study also aimed to evaluate how reliable these newspapers and investigate
the extent to which they could be considered as historical proven documents
following the level of quality and European archival documents. The research
followed the historical-analytical approach - which is based on research and
investigation of historical facts - in monitoring the news and historical events that
Oman witnessed which were reported in those newspapers through various
sources. The historical facts were also analyzed to reach a comprehensive
knowledge on the political, economic, and social aspects in comparison with what
have been documented by Omani sources and history books. Also, the researcher
used the comparative approach to compare between the historical facts and news
reported in these newspaper and what covered in the Omani history sources.
Additionally, the statistical approach was followed to provide some statistics about
the economics of Oman throughout the studied period.
The study was divided into an introduction, four chapters, and a
conclusion. The introduction includes a brief overview of the political, economic,
and social conditions in Oman and Zanzibar at the beginning of the twentieth
century AD. The first chapter shed light on the establishment of Omani Arab
newspapers in Zanzibar and their roles in transmitting and documenting Omani
news. The second chapter reviewed the most important articles and news
documented the political and economic facts in Oman. The third chapter also
reviewed articles covering social and cultural news of Oman. The fourth chapter
focused on the impact of press on the political, economic, social, and cultural life
of society in Oman and Zanzibar. The results of this study highlighted the onset
of the Omani Arab press in Zanzibar, and its role in documenting events. It also
classified the most important news and articles published in Omani newspapers
in Zanzibar, related to political, economic, social, and cultural issues. The study
concluded that these newspapers are considered one of the reliable sources used
to convey live news to the Omani people live in Zanzibar, and the great impact
the newspapers have achieved on the political, economic, and social levels.
