Purpose: This research investigates the intricate dynamics of logistics processes and
their profound impact on the shelf life of onions and potatoes, with a focus on the
transportation journey from the ports of Suhar and Al Suwaiq to distribution centers in
Oman.
Methodology: Employing a comprehensive methodology involving flow process
charts, thematic analysis, and the utilization of descriptive analysis, the study draws
on data from survey questionnaires, literature reviews, and structured interview to
provide a nuanced understanding of impacts and potential solutions within the logistics
processes governing the shelf life of perishable commodities in Oman.
Findings: The primary determinant is the substantial delay during the release
processes at Suhar port, surpassing that of Al Suwaiq, emphasizing the need for
streamlined procedures at this crucial entry point. The study determines that
transportation significantly impacts onion shelf life, while storage practices play a
pivotal role for potatoes. These challenges must be addressed to reduce economic
impacts, improve customer satisfaction, and maintain supply chain integrity. This
research adds to the global debate on sustainable and efficient food supply networks.
Swift delivery to distributors and retailers, expedited consignee inspections, and
maintaining optimal temperature and humidity during transportation and storage are
identified as crucial factors for enhancing shelf life. Recommendations to address these
challenges and improve overall shelf life include implementing accurate demand
forecasting through statistical software, adopting modern technologies such as smart
packaging and atmosphere-controlled storage, modified atmosphere packaging,
diversifying import markets to mitigate losses, and conducting root cause analyses of
delays to streamline inspection processes and enhance safety and security procedures.
