This study aims at designing a proposed collective counseling program to reduce the level of hyperactivity disorder among students of grade eight at Basic Education schools in the Sultanate of Oman. The proposed program is structured on theories which were written in this field as well as previous studies which addressed the same topic.
The program is composed of 12 counseling sessions. Each session lasts for a period of 60 to 90 minutes. In the first and second sessions the counselor and group members shall get acquainted with each other. The objective is to build trust, reduce resistance and create familiarity between the counselor and the group. During these two sessions, the members of the group shall be introduced to the concept of collective psychological counseling and to the program which will be applied to them. In the third session, members of the group shall get to know the concept of hyperactivity disorder including its symptoms, causes and effects on individuals. The fourth session is concerned with training on reducing levels of hyperactivity disorder among the members of the group. The fifth session of the program aims at training students on self- regulation of attention. Sessions six to eleven shall focus on training members of the group on some skills which may help in reducing levels of hyperactivity disorder such as training on communication skills, social skills, self-monitoring and self-assertiveness skills as well as training on problem solving skills. During the twelfth session members of the group shall review the most important points that are covered throughout the program and make plans to support each other to maintain their progress after the counseling program is over.
The researcher suggests many counseling approaches such as discussions, dialogues, lectures, giving instructions, modeling, behavioral contract, feedback, role playing, reinforcement, imagine style and homework.
In order to help in implementation of these approaches, the researcher suggests that the following tools may be used: cassettes, audio recorder, projector, transparencies. A4 sheet, pens, a white board, white board markers, cards and training models.
Finally, the researcher hopes that this counseling program may be useful to social workers and counselors as well as concerned personnel within Basic Education schools in the Sultanate of Oman so as to reduce levels of hyperactivity disorder among students.
The researcher recommends that a pilot study may be carried out to investigate the effectiveness of this program in reducing levels of hyperactivity disorder among students of grade eight at Basic Education schools.
