This research aims to clarify the legal description of engagements in the marriage contracts and to discuss the views of Sharia and law scholars and their approval of its legal framing and the legal effects resulting from that framing. Into four sections, this research discussed engagement according to Sharia and legal scholars and Arab legislation and the judicial application of the engagements legal framing. The paper concluded that engagement could only be considered a non-binding promise. In addition, the amount of compensation for breaking off engagement does not determine solely by its nature, but there are other reasons to be considered. Another conclusion revealed that the Omani Legislation had clarified the legal nature of engagements; however, it had not discussed the issue of compensation.
