The current study aimed investigating the effectiveness of the cartoons in developing comprehension and critical listening skills of grade five students. The sample of the study consisted of 135 students who were divided into two groups: experimental and controlled group each of which consisted of female and male students.
The researcher prepared lessons using cartoons in significance to the comprehension and critical listening skills. In order to test the effectiveness of this strategy, The researcher designed a test. To establish their validity, the instruments were validated by a group of referees. Then a Cronbach alpha Test was run to establish the reliability of the test which was (84.0).
The test were applied before and after teaching the intended listening skills for both of the study groups: the experimental and the controlled .
The statistical analysis of the results of the post test showed a significant effect of the learning method in student achievement in critical listening skills; the experimental group did significantly better than the control group. However, there was no significance difference between the two groups in the comprehension listening skills.
Drawing upon the findings of this study, the researcher recommends the investment of cartoons as one of the modern teaching methods to develop the students' skills in Arabic and provide teachers with professional development programs that train and eventually encourage them to use the cartoons in teaching Arabic.
