This study compared the effectiveness of the teaching practice program in the Sultan Qaboos University (S.Q.U) and the colleges of Education in providing their students with the necessary skills of teaching history. The sample of the study contained 60 newly graduated male and female teachers from both programs ( during the school year 1999-2000). To answer the above questions a self-developed checklist based on previous studies was constructed. The checklist was validated by having a group of experts judging its appropriateness. The checklist consisted of 53 skills tapping the following categories : lesson preparation, teaching skills, visual aids, classroom management, lesson activities and evaluation. The internal consistency of the checlist based on the pilot study was 0.92. The finding of the study can be summarized as follow 1- The success of the teaching practice program of the S.Q.U in providing its gradnates with the nescesary skilss in teaching. The average performance in all the teaching skills was (2.3) which is equal to 78% out of 3, which is above the acceptable level that is required by the ministry of education, (70%).
2-The teaching practice program in the colleges of education provided its gradantes with the necessary skills of teaching history to lesser degree . The average performance in all the teaching skills was (2) which is equal to (69%). This result is considered below the averoge according to the ministry of
education, criteria (70%).
3- The results of the comparison between the two programs used in the S.Q.U and the one in the colleges of education showed that the S.Q.U program is more effective in providing history teachers with teaching skills.
4- The results also showed that the female teacher students out performed the male students in all the teaching skills.
Finally recomnendations were given to help in evaluating the two programs. Such suggestions would help in improving the two programs in preparing better teachers in general and constructing a better teaching practice program. Suggestions for future research in the topic were also given.
