The purposes of the present study were to identify the prevelance rate of learned helplessness among students of grades (5-10) in the schools of Muscat governorate; and to identify which variables can predict Learned Helplessness the most: grade, gender, educational level of the parents, and academic achievement.
To achieve these goals, the reasecher had developed and applied a Learned Helplessness scale on (849) students of year 2015-2016 and collected their total academic achievement grades (GPA) of the first semester.
Results of the study showed that the prevalence rate of Learned Helplessness in the schools of Muscat governorate had reached 10.84%, indicating that the sample is with a low level of Learned Helplessness.
Multiple regression analysis (Stepwise Multiple Linear Regression) results showed the presence of four variables that can predict Learned Helplessness, which were: academic achievement, fifth grade, ninth grade, and tenth grade. These variables combined interpreted 23% of variation.
As for the dimensions of Learned Helplessness, results showed that the second dimension (reduced ability to control events) can be predicted by male gender, and the fourth dimension (low self-esteem) can be predicted by the educational level of the father (reads and writes without a certificate).
According to the results, the researcher recommended that teachers, psychologists and social workers prepare educational programs that measure Learned Helplessness among students in each semester; and to provide therapeutic and outreach programs to reduce it for whom has high levels of it.
