The aim of this study was to determine the somatotype and general physical fitness components of national sport teams players in Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), also this study examined the relationship between somatotype and general physical fitness components for this players. The participation was 55 players from different team sports in SQU aged (21.49+1.94). TO determine the somatotype of the players Heath-Carter method was used. Other approved tests was applied for general physical fitness components such as speed, agility, flexibility muscle strength, leg muscle capacity and aerobic power.
The mean values and standard deviation of the measurements taken
were calculated. Pearson correlation coefficient was made to determine
whether there was a relationship between the somatotype and performance in physical fitness components.
The most important results of this study was that the mesomorph (muscular type) was the most common somatotype among national sport teams players. The recent study found that there is positive relationship between endomorphy somytotype and muscle strength, and inverse relationship between endomorphy somytotype and endurance. Moreover, positive relationship between mesomorph somatotype and agility. Moreover, the ectomorph somatotype had a positive relationship with muscular capacity and inverse relationship with muscular strength. As a conclusion, the researcher recommended that coaches should take into consideration the type of somatotype and anthropometric measurements while selecting national team players for each sport.
