This study aimed to identify the obstacles and difficulties which face students at Physical Education Department in Sultan Qaboos University (SQU). It also aimed to present some suggestions to overcome those obstacles.
The sample of the study consisted of 147 participants from the Department of Physical Education; representing around 79.47% of the total population. The researcher used the descriptive model in designing the questionnaire form; based on the following six main constructs:
- Services and facilities provided to students.
- Teaching Techniques and evaluation.
- Tutors.-
- Studying modules.
- Timetables.
-The college and department related managerial issues.
The questionnaire form has covered 69 obstacle elements which might face the student. To test the validity and creditability of the study, it has been measured by using the Face Validity technique, where the Cronbach- Alpha was calculated to assure the correlation between the constructs under this study. The correlation ration was (0.90).
The researcher used the SPSS program to run, process and analyzed the gathered data, taking into consideration the mathematics techniques such as average, variations ratios and percentage as well. In addition, the T-Test has been conducted to
identify the differences among the study results according to the variables (gender, accumulative grade, desire of the subject, transfer, cultural background), where ONE WAY ANOVA technique has been applied to identify the differences among the study results according to the academic year of the student.
The study found the following results : According to the constructs of the study, students face number of obstacles and difficulties, where the most important were related to the timetables and managerial issues in the department. Other difficulties were found in the following order of importance: services and facilities, studying modules, faculty members, teaching techniques and evaluation.
The most obstacle elements facing students in the Physical Education Department was insufficient time to review the subjects before exams, mismanagement of timetables, less entertainment programs weakness of the financial support, weakness of the level of exams to measure students capabilities, weakness of academic mentors and - shortage of comprehensive books of the entire module.
Statically, students under probation program, senior students and students from urban areas are facing more obstacles and difficulties than others.
Based on above results, the researcher has presented some suggestions to overcome those obstacles as well as to open the door for further studies in the future.
