The purpose of this study was to determine the level of sports activities and intrinsic and extrinsic motivations for sports. In addition, a model was proposed to examine the role of time being spent in sports activities as a mediator on the relationship of intrinsic motivation (IM) and extrinsic motivation (EM) for sports and gender with the academic achievement of Sultan Qaboos university (SQU) students. To achieve this, the sports activities and sports motivation scales (SMS) which consist of two subscales (IM) (EM) for sports were applied. The sample consisted of (496) male and female students who were registered in the summer program 2013. Data were analyzed using the mean scores and standard deviations to determine the levels of sports activities and (IM) (EM) for sports. In addition, multiple regressions were used to determine the impact of the time spent in sports activities on the relationship of (IM) (EM) for sports and gender with the academic achievement. A descriptive approach was applied to conduct this study. The results showed that: - The levels of (IM) (EM) for sports among SQU students were above intermediate, at the level (3,86) for (IM) and (3,47) for (EM) whereas the level of sports activities was moderate at the level (2,85). - Sports activities time was predicted by scores in the (EM) for sports and according to gender. The Beta values were (0.27) for the EM and (0.26) for gender (both were significant) - Academic achievement was predictable from the time spent on sports activities as Beta value was (0.13-) (significant) - Academic achievement was unpredictable from the IM as Beta value was not significant (0.01), whereas this was possible through measuring the EM for sports and from gender, with values of (0.13) for EM and (0.13) for gender motivation (all significant). - Sport activities time had no impact on the relationship between (EM & IM for sports and gender). With regard to academic achievements as proved from the given values: (EM) for sports was (0.14-); gender was (0.35-) (both significant), whereas the value for sport activities time was not significant (0.03). The study was concluded with some recommendations and suggestions.
