ABSTRACT.
Nothing is known about the chemical composition of Adenium. obesum (Forssk.) Roem & Schult (Apocynaceae) growing in Southern region of Oman. However, some claims have been made in the past by literature, regarding its usage as a medicinal plant. On that basis phychemical investigations of various extracts of the roots of A. obesum resulted in the identification of five well-known compounds. These compounds are a-(D)-glucopyranosyl-B-D)-fructofuranoside (sucrose), 3,7,4! Trimethyl quercetin, 3,4-dimethyl quercetin, Sitosterol-30-B-(D) glucopyranoside and 3,7,5--trimethyl myricetin. The crude extracts and their identified compounds were tested against three human pathogenic bacteria using agar-well diffusion method. All samples were devoid of antibacterial activities against the tested bacteria except 3,7,4'- Trimethyl quercetin (Compound 2). 3,7,4 - Trimethyl quercetin exhibits antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (NCTC, 6571).
