The research starts with a theoretical introduction on the Art of Maqammat and introduces its famous writers. Then it briefly shifts to talk about the Omani Maqammat and its writers, mainly the writer of the five Maqammat it studies. The research adapts the analytical methodology utilizing Structural & Artistic approaches. First, the structural approach aims at looking at the structure of Maqammat in three main aspects:
1- Narration: it is the main component of Maqammat that determines its beginning and its end, backup all other components and strengthens the unity. The research considers the narration to be the component which divides the Maqammah into a title, a beginning, a journey in which characters develop to reach the moment of acquaintance and the definite parting at the end. AL Barwani follows a similar sequence when writing Maqammah as did the writers preceded him. Afterwards, the research attempts to comprehend the relationship that connects the five Maqammat.
2- Conversation: the conversation occurs within the narration of AL Maqammah. It slows down the pace of the narration leaving more space and time to decorating the text. In addition, creates more movement. The research divides the conversation into dialogue and monologue.
3- Intertextuality: it is highly present in Maqammat AL-Barwani. Thus, the research
treats it as an important component and attempts to explore its types and classifies them. Intertextuality tells how often the writer illustrates and\or quotes others; which indicates his knowledge and background. The research finds out that Arabic sayings are very present in Maqammat AL-Barwani, meaning that the writer had exposure to Arabic traditional writings and sayings.
Second, the research investigates the artistic aspect of Maqammat AL-Barwani from three
angles:
1- Language: it is both a mean of expression and a carrier of power and effect. Therefore, the research tries to study the function of language in Maqammat AL Barwani. It looks at how language works as an arousal, effect, attention rouser and an indication to the meaning behind metaphors. Moreover, it studies how the language uses titles to pass the target message through.
2- Characters: the research also aims at recognizing the physical, social and psychological dimensions of the characters. It gives special focus to analyzing the main character, the hero. Furthermore, it considers the artistic functions of the character.
3- Space: it is where the characters perform. The research explores the different spaces in the five Maqammat, and it recognizes the role it plays in forming the characters. It also gives an insight on how language is involved in humanizing the space poeticizing it to indicate its social dimension. The research gives a briefing at the end of each section, and a briefing at the end of each chapter; followed by a conclusion that summarizes the research and presents its findings.
