The current study aimed to identify the most used emotional regulation
strategies and goal-orientations among students of the tenth grade in North
Al-Sharqia governorate in the Sultanate of Oman. It also aimed to examine
gender differences in these strategies and goal orientations. In addition, the
current study investigated the prediction of goal orientation in the use of
emotional self-regulation strategies. The study sample was randomly
selected from grade ten including 345 students (173 males - 172 females) in
governmental schools. The study utalized the descriptive method. And two
measures were applied: the emotional regulation strategies scale and goal
orientations scale.
The study found that the most used strategy among the respondents
was the positive refocusing strategy and the least used was the
catastrophizing strategy. The most common goal orientation was for
mastery-approach and the least common was for mastery-avoidance. There
are statistically significant differences between emotional regulation
strategies and goal orientations due to gender. And to the possibility of
predicting the direction of the goal performance - approach by acceptance
strategy, the orientation of mastery - approach by the strategy of positive
refocusing, the orientation of performance - approach by suppression
strategy and goal orientation performance - avoidance by the social sharing
strategy. The current study recommends the Enabling students to reflect on
feelings, strategies and goals, which helps them to review effective and
inactive strategies.
