A new series of protected and diterminal alkynes extended T-conjugation through
ethylenedioxyrthiophenes, 2,5-bis(trimethylsilylethynyl)-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene,
1b, 2,5-bis(ethynyl)-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene, 1c, 5,5°-bis(trimethylsilylethynyl) 2,22-bis(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), 2b, 5,5°-bis(ethynyl)-2,2-bis(3,4-ethylenedi oxythiophene), 2c, 5,5"-bis(trimethylsilylethynyl)-2,2°,5°,2"-ter(3,4-ethylenedioxy thiophene), 3b, has been synthesized and characterized. Reaction of trans 29 [(Ph)(Et3P)2PtCl] with half equivalent of each of the diterminal ethynes lc and 2c gives the Pt(II) di-ynes 1M and 2M. Novel platinum(II) poly-ynes trans-[Pt(P"Buz)2
C=C-R-C=C-In 1P and 2P have been synthesized by the Cul-catalysed dehydrohalogenation poly-condensation reactions of 1c and 2c in a 1:1 reaction with trans-[(P"Buz)2PtCl2]. The new materials have been characterized by analytical and spectroscopic methods, and the single crystal X-ray structures of 1b and 1M have been determined. All di-ynes and poly-ynes are soluble in organic solvents and readily cast into thin films. The optical spectroscopy of the new di-ynes and poly ynes has been investigated.
