English abstract
The present study aimed to identify the degree of irrational thoughts and future anxiety among a sample of Nizwa University students, relationship between them, and to identify the statistically significant differences in grade of thoughts irrationality and future concern, depending on some variables: age (17-20) and (21-24), gender (males and females), the school year (first - fourth), and college.
Statistical society for study consist of all Nizwa University students for the academic year 2015/2016 in the undergraduate during autumn 2015 and amount to 5260 students, while the statistical sample for the study was 10% of study group which was in the amount of 526 students those are regularly in the classroom distributed into 263 students of each academic year from the four Colleges located at the University of Nizwa.
For achieving the purpose of study goals the researcher used irrational thoughts measure for Nadia Rateeb (2009), and future anxiety measure for Zainab Shuqair (2005), The study revealed the following results:
- Degree of irrational thoughts in the low level of sample is(0.6%), in the simple level (29.3%) , in the mid-level (66.0%) and in the high level (4.2), while the future anxiety grade in very low level (19.8%), in the simple level (22.1%), in the mid-level (56.7%) and in the high level (1.5%). - The presence of a statistically significant correlation between the future anxiety grade and irrational thoughts dimensions degree where Pearson Correlation Coefficient reached to (1) degree at a level of statistical significance (0.01 = a).
- The lack of statistically significant differences between respondents of the sample on an irrational thoughts scale depending on the type variable, while there are statistically significant differences among the sample depending on the variable age for the age group (17 to 20 years), and accordingly college variable in the interest of the Faculty of Economics and Management, Information Systems, Engineering and Architecture College. - The lack of statistically significant differences between respondents of the sample in the future anxiety grade, depending on the type variable, while there are statistically depending on the variable age for the age group (17-20 years), and in accordance with the variable college in favor of Arts and Sciences College.
The researcher has concluded to a number of relevant recommendations of the study, including: emphasizing the importance of raising public awareness in counseling and mental health issues for undergraduate students in the Sultanate of Oman, and propos of psychological measures design about irrational thoughts and future anxiety at the level of each student guidance center in all the universities in the Sultanate including University of Nizwa, under study in order to conduct psychological test on the phenomena for newly students enrolled to university study before graduation. The study also brought out the recommendation that emphasizes the importance of training programs and psychological guidance programs to refute and falsify irrational thoughts and reduce future anxiety at the level of the University of Nizwa. In addition to the importance of studying and discussing the phenomena of study by conducting experimental and descriptive studies and linking them to other variables.
