English abstract
This thesis examines the topic of protecting the personal information of social media channels users, and aims at shedding light on the law of electronic transactions about which the seventh chapter is. Social networks form the
modern medium of communication and are considered one of the second generation 2G web applications. Although these networks attract many users because of their special features, they can bring about many negative effects as a result of their misuse by users or because of the nature of these networks themselves. These channels don't provide means of thorough protection for their content and data of users and most importantly they don't protect the private information of users that form an essential part of users' identities, This thesis triggers many questions and discusses legal problems related to personal data on the internet, aiming at providing a definition for personal data and name the different ways of their misuse on social networks as well as finding means of protecting the user's personal data against threats of the service provider or other users.
The thesis came out with many results as summarized below:
1 .Although being studied, personal data hasn't been defined in Omani legislations.
2 .The social networks service provider is responsible for any provided solution with regard to personal data even if in the first place it was the user who posted the information unintentionally.
3. Impersonalizing private data is one of the technical ways to ensure the application of the privacy right "the right to be forgotten" on the internet.
