English abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the current issues which are of interest or concern to secondary students and which should therefore be addressed by the Islamic Education books at secondary level in Oman. The study represents the views of a cross-section of Islamic Education teachers. The study also aims at evaluating the degree to which the current curriculum already incorporates these issues. Finally, the study suggests a proposal for incorporating all of those issues across the curriculum for the three secondary grades. The population of the study consisted of 678 male and female secondary teachers of Islamic Education . A sample of 253 teachers from three Educational region was selected for the study. The study also involved analysis of secondary level Islamic education books. Two questionnaires were developed. The first was used to identify the current issues of interest or concern to the students and asked teachers to suggest where these issues should be incorporated. This questionnaire contained 60 items which came under five main topics. The second questionnaire was developed to analyse the content of the current Islamic education books for the three grades at the secondary level. This questionnaire consisted of 38 items that came under four topics. Percentages and means were used to analyse the data and to draw conclusions. The reşults of the study showed that Islamic education books need to include some current topics that are suitable for secondary level students. The study found that Islamic education books do not pay enough attention to current issues. The study also showed that there are significant differences between male and female views on the importance of some of the current issues. The study concludes by emphasizing the necessity of relating the content of the Islamic education curriculum to the Omani society and to students' specific problems and needs by incorporating those issues identified by the study in the curriculum. The study recommends taking into account the differences between fem addressing issues which are appropriate to each group. The study proposes a model that shows how different issues might be incorporated for each of the three grades at the secondary level.
