English abstract
This study aimed to identify parenting styles & its relationship with locus of control among the tenth grade students in Muscat Governorate.
The researcher used the descriptive correlative methodology. The study sample consisted of (714) students in the tenth grade of primary school, 340 males&374 females aged 14-16 years were selected randomly.
The instruments used the Parental Authority Questionnaire (Buri, 1991) & translated by Al dhafri et al. (2011), & Locus of Control Scale developed by Rotter&translated by Alaa Eddin Kafafi (1982).
Findings showed that:
The predominance of the authoritarian & authoritative parenting styles among the families of the sample&that the internal locus of control was predominant among the participants.
The findings indicated that there were significant differences between males & females in authoritarian & permissive parenting styles in favor of males, while there were no significant differences between males&females in locus of control (internal-external).
The findings also indicated that there was significant correlation between the (authoritative & permissive) parenting styles & internal locus of control, while there was no significant correlation between the (authoritarian, authoritative & permissive) parenting styles & external locus of control.
Finally, the findings showed that the authoritative & permissive parenting styles could serve as predictors of internal locus of control.
The findings of this study indicated that;
There were some recommendations according to the study results which may develop positive locus of control student's, both internal & external. Its aim is to target the students from the lower grades to the higher grades,&the early detection of students with a negative locus of control, both internal&external, so that this class of students receives counseling & psychological support from the specialists in addition to preparing counseling sessions for their parents.
