English abstract
One of the important reasons that prompt me to choose this topic is the lack of academic studies on Omani dialects based on the modern linguistics concepts. The study will shed light on the phonemic features of Al-Hamra dialect.
The study has been divided into introduction, four chapters and conclusion. The first chapter addressed the phonemic system of the dialect. It was found that it has 27 consonants and twelve vowels, 34 of which are in harmony with the classical Arabic. The consonants (d ) and [q] are lost, and the vowels [e], [ 0 ], [e: ] and [ 0: ] are added.
In the second chapter the study explained that the dialect consist of 6 main syllables as is the case with the classical Arabic. Two extra syllables have been added due to phonological changes: (ccvc), (ccvvc). stress rules of the dialect were concluded. Its not that different from the classical Arabic except those cases which are result of the phonological development nature of the dialect.
In the third chapter, the assimilation process was discussed, showing the different types. Examples from the dialect were sited.
The fourth chapter studied different aspects of the dialect: vowel alteration consonant deletion at the end of the word. It discussed the deletion of glottal stop at the beginning, middle and end of a word. The Affrication of [k ] at the beginning, middle and end of the word is also discussed. It was found that this dialect tends to ease the pronunciation of the sound in order to reduce the tongue effort.
