English abstract
This study aimed at investigating the counseling needs of private universities students. The sample of the study consisted of 410 male and female students were randomly chosen from all private universities during the academic year 2007/2008. To achieve the main aim of the study, a 35 items questionnaire was used to identify the academic, social, psychological, and professional needs. Reliability and validity of the instrument were checked using the proper statistical procedures. To analyze data of the study, the researcher used the descriptive statistics.
The findings of the study revealed the following:
1) Students' counseling needs were high. Academic needs ranked first,
then psychological, professional, and social, respectively.
2) There were no significant differences in the study subjects' responses for counseling needs due to student's gender, and his academic grade on all domains of counseling needs.
3) There were no significant differences in the participants' responses on the domains of the academic, social, and professional needs due to university variable.
4) There were no significant differences in the respondents' responses on the domains of the academic, psychological, and professional needs due to academic year variable.
5) There were significant differences in the participants' responses on the domain of psychological needs due to university variable. These differences were in favor of the University of Dhofar.
6) There were significant differences in the respondents' responses on the domain of psychological needs due to academic year variable. These differences were in favor of the third year students.
In the light of these findings, a set of relevant recommendations were introduced.
