English abstract
This study, titled "Rhetorical Applications of Al-Shawkani (died
1250 AH) and Ibn Ashur (died 1393 AH) and their semantic impacts: a
comparative study through some Surahs of the twenty-seventh and
twenty-eighth Juzs (parts of Quran)", seeks to investigate the rhetorical
application mentioned by Al-Shawkani and Ibn Ashur in their
interpretation of the Surahs hereof and compare them with each other
to provide a complete overview of each interpreter's approach to
addressing the rhetorical application of the three rhetoric sciences and
the way of each of them to use these applications to serve the porpuses
of the Quranic texts of various subjects.
The study consisted of an introduction and two chapters. The
introduction provided an overview of both interpreters and their
interpretations (Fath Al-Qadeer) and (Al-Tahreer and Al-Tanweer).
The first chapter investigated the way each of them addressed the
applications of the science of semantics (Al-Maani) in the various
topics of the Quran (Islamic creed, Fiqh, and morals) and the semantic
impacts provided by these applications to clarify the meanings of the
Quranic texts and serve their objectives. The second chapter addressed
the applications of Eloquence (Al-Bayan) and Figurative Style(Al Badee') sciences in the same way and for the same purpose seeks to
clarify the semantic impacts of these applications and their added
benefits for serving the meanings of the Quranic texts and purposes of
various subjects.
The study concluded that both interpreters have succeeded to make
use of the esoterical applications they mentioned within the sciences of
Eloquence and Figurative Style to serve the purposes of the Quranic
text. Therefore, their usage of rhetorical applications stressed the
Quranic meanings even more. Besides, the Quranic meanings have been
instilled in the hearts of the audience in a way that would never be seen
without using these applications. However, the study showed some
methodological differences between both interpreters in the way they
addressed these applications. For example, Ibn Ashur showed richer
examples and wider scope of using the aspects of both sciences than Al Shawkani, as he mentioned all of their branches without exception. Ibn
Ashur also showed a deeper functioning of these applications to serve
the Quranic text. With regard to Figurative Style (Al-Badee'), only Ibn
Ashur widely mentioned the applications of this science in the Surahs
addressed in this study. However, the reflections of these applications
on the creed, practice, and attitude dimensions were not clear. Al Shawkani did not address the applications of Figurative Style in the Surahs addressed in this study.
