English abstract
Social media is one of the tangible features of modern era due to its
widespread among members of society, especially the youth group, and its
growing role in influencing various societal issues and values including
citizenship values among Omani youth. This study aimed at identifying the
role of social media in promoting the citizenship values; pinpointing the most
prominent social media that contribute to enhancing the citizenship values
among Omani youth; and finding out the obstacles that limit the effectiveness
of social media in promoting citizenship values among Omani youth.
For the purpose of the study, the researcher relied on the quantitative and
descriptive approach and used the questionnaire as a tool for data collection.
He applied the scientific methodology to ensure the validity and reliability
of the questionnaire. The study population consisted of students from Sultan
Qaboos University, where a purposive sample of (190) male and female
students was selected, and the respondents› answers were subjected to the
statistical analysis program (SPSS)
One of the most important findings of the study was that Twitter,
Instagram and YouTube are the most prominent social media platforms that
contribute to enhancing citizenship values. The study also showed that social
media plays a major role in promoting citizenship values among Omani youth
The study resulted in a set of recommendations, among those is creating a
national electronic platform to communicate with young people through social
media, and to use this platform for enhancing the values of citizenship among
Omani youth. It also recommended launching an annual competition in the
Sultanate for the best social media content that aims at promoting citizenship
values in the Omani society at both the institutional and individual levels.
