English abstract
Aims: This study aimed to (1) Measure the degree of the acquaintance of tenth-grade
students with disasters and the mechanisms of dealing with them, (2) Identify students' attitudes
toward disasters, (3) Measure the extent to which students possess behaviors that enable them to
deal with disasters, (4) and the disclosure of the correlation between the degree of awareness of
the tenth-grade students in the Sultanate of Oman about disasters according to gender and
governorate. Methodology: The researcher employed the descriptive approach, for a sample of
(800) male and female students, from Muscat, North Al Batinah, and South Al Batinah
Governorates' schools. The researcher employed three tools to implement the study (cognitive
scale, attitudes, and behaviors). The cognitive scale contained (16) phrases distributed on four axes;
a multiple-choice type test was used; The attitudes scale included (16) phrases distributed on four
axes, and the Likert tripartite questionnaire was used; The behavioral attitudes scale included
attitudes that reflect the five disasters targeted by the current study. The arbitrators confirmed the
validity of the tools, and the reliability of the tools was verified using Alpha-Cranach, and the
reliability coefficient of the cognitive scale was (0.68). The arbitrators confirmed the tools' validity,
and the tools' stability was verified using Alpha-Cranach, where the stability coefficient for the
cognitive scale was (0.68), the attitudes scale was (0.80), and the behavioral scale was (0.62).
Results: The results indicate that tenth-grade students' general average level of awareness was
good, as the percentage of the general average was (65.62). In addition, and by looking at the
arithmetic means of the test and the behavioral attitudes and attitudes scale, it is clear that it ranges
between (56.36 to 78.61), as it is confined between acceptable and good; As it came at a good level
in attitudes, and acceptable in knowledge and behavioral attitudes. Moreover, the results for the
gender variable showed statistically significant differences at the level of significance at (α ≤ 0.05)
in favor of females regarding the knowledge scale with an arithmetic mean of (57.20) and the
behavior scale with an arithmetic mean of (63.47). Furthermore, there are statistically significant
differencesregarding the governorate variable in favor of North Al Batinah Governorate and South
Al Batinah Governorate regarding the knowledge scale with an arithmetic mean of (55.73) and the
behavior scale with an arithmetic mean of (63.30). Recommendations: Considering these results,
the researcher recommended addressing the problem of the low level in students' knowledge levels
by developing the content of the social studies subject, enhancing the culture of reading and self learning among students about disasters, developing behaviors to deal with them, and promoting
the principle of voluntary work in society.
