English abstract
The current study aimed to identify the possibility of predicting the level of social
anxiety through the dimensions of motivation, and to identify the level of social
anxiety and motivation, and the differences in them according to the gender variable
among students at the University of Nizwa in the Sultanate of Oman. To achieve
this, a descriptive predicitive methodology was used, and the sample consisted of
516 male and female students, who were chosen by the availablity sampling. The
tools used were a scale of social anxiety (Radwan, 2001) and a scale of motivation
(Vallerand et al., 1992). The results of the study showed that the dimensions of
motivation (intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, and Amotivation) predict
social anxiety among males, and explained 31.5% of the variance in social anxiety,
but the dimensions of motivation did not have a statistically significant effect on
social anxiety among females. The results also showed a low level of social anxiety
and amotivation, and a high level of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Morerver,
there were statistically significant differences in the level of social anxiety and
amotivation according to gender, favoring females. There were statistically
significant differences in intrinsic motivation, favoring males, while there were no
statistically significant differences in extrinsic motivation according to sex.
