English abstract
The researcher noted that the problems and characteristics of old age are under researched compared to other age groups such as childhood or adolescence. I, therefore conducted a qualitative study that targets the most common problems among the elderly in the Sultanate of Oman. These problems were divided into a number of categories; social, psychological, health and economic problems. The studied sample was community group of 25 elders with their ages ranging from 70 to 80 years. They come from a number of villages of Ibri in the Sultanate of Oman. Deep interviews were used as a tool of study. First the researcher conducted a theoretical study of previous literature and research papers on the same subject. Fact finding and information gathering from multiple sources was also
carried out.
Secondly, the researcher conducted a field study based on a series of deep interviews to sense the social, psychological and health problems facing the elderly and come up with conclusions.
Some of the most notable conclusions center around loneliness and
solitude which top the list of social problems. While rheumatism and
arthritis top the list of health problems, sadness is the most
significant psychological problem facing the elderly. These
conclusions were then analyzed in light of previous studies as well as
logical and scientific evidences.
