English abstract
The study aimed at identification of some personal traits and the relation of those traits with social phobia among the students in University of Nizwa. The study sample
consisted of (290) students, males and females. Two measures were used:
1. The list of the biggest five factor Inventory scale (Costa, Mccrae, 1992)Arabized
by Alkalbania (2006) which consists of (60) statements. 2. Social Phobia Measure prepared by the researcher and included (42)
Statements.
Both measures obtained high level of validity and reliability.
Findings:
- Vigilance of conscience trait recorded highest levels followed by acceptability or kindness then came the extraversion. Openness got an average level, while neuroticism trait was at the lowest level.
- The level of social phobia among students of the University of Nizwa was low.
- There is a positive correlation between neuroticism trait and dimensions of avoidance and fear, and the total phobias. In contrast there is a negative correlation between the following:
1. neuroticism trait and the dimension of physical changes.
2. openness and the dimension of fear and Total phobias
3. vigilance of conscience and dimension of avoidance
4. kindness and the dimensions of avoidance, fear and total phobias.
- Lack of statistically significant differences at the level of (a < 0.05) between males and females in all dimensions of the scale of the five major factors, except at neuroticism dimension where males ware more neurotic than females.
- Lack of statistically significant differences at the level of (a < 0.05) between males and females in all dimensions of social phobia scale.
