English abstract
This study aims at defining the meaning of renewal in Qur'anic exegesis and to explain the importance of its rules and forms. It also aims at familiarising with the North African school in tafsīr in the 15th century AH and the manifestations of renewal in this school through examples.
The study comprises of three chapters; the first chapter is about the meaning of tajdīd, its rules and forms; the second chapter discusses the contemporary North African school, its most important representatives and characteristics, and the most prominent manifestations of renewal in this school. The third chapter finally presents examples of contemporary North African works of tafsir and their most outstanding manifestations of renewal.
The results of the study have brought to light the importance of renewal in tafsīr in the treatment of the reality of Muslims. They show how to save the Islamic Ummah from ongoing differences of opinion through returning to a new understanding of the verses of the Holy Book. Renewal gives the Muslim the confidence in this religion and asserts the suitability of the Qur'an in every time and place. The results have also shown that renewal is divided into trends, where the social reform trend is most prominent with North African exegetes, as well as into methodology, particularly the thematic methodology, which the North African exegetes did not resort to much. As to the renewal in form, it mainly took place in the exegesis of certain parts of the Qur'an, or in the usage of modern technology. The study also concludes that Morocco and Algeria have taken the greater part of contribution to renewal in tafsīr. While Shaykh 'Abd Allāh Kannūn Qaşab preceded in the detailed exegesis of surahs, Shaykh Mustafā Hamzah had a greater contribution to scientific exegesis than others.
In conclusion, the researcher asserts the necessity to synergise the endeavours of the Ummah's scholars and its scientific institutions to edit a contemporary North African tafsīr incorporating renewal so as to introduce a new contemporary reading
