English abstract
The aim of this study is to identify the reality of the use of search strategy in the PubMed database by the faculty of Oman Medical College (Sohar Branch) and the effect of training on the precision of information retrieval. Two research methodologies were used in this research: quantitative exploratory descriptive research methodology and experimental research methodology. Quantitative method based on questionnaires was used to identify the reality and the strategic tools developed by faculties when searching the PubMed database. Meanwhile, experimental method was used with 8 participants to evaluate their improvement after they had engaged in a training program focused on the use of search strategy and Medical Subject Heading (MeSH). SPSS was used to analyze the collected data. The results showed that 89.3% of participants used Basic searching in PubMed and they were not aware about some features offered for such advanced searches, such as Filters; PubMed tools; Single Citation Manager; and Medical Subject Heading (MeSH). Based on the experimental evidence, participants were affected positively after attending training in using MeSH for searching PubMed.
Based on the results of the current study, a list of recommendations can be presented that includes: the need for more training courses, especially in using search strategy and MeSH; conducting induction courses before the beginning of every academic year to present the library's services, including electronic databases; and increasing numbers of library staff to increase the capacity for offering training programs for participants.
