English abstract
The present study aimed to examine the childhood abuse experiences and self concept and among grade 11 students in the schools of Muscat governorate and to identify which dimensions of childhood abuse can predict self-concept. The sample consisted of 600 students (male=303and female=297) who were given two instruments: A Childhood Abuse Experiences Questionnaire (developed for the purpose of the study) and Self-Description scale SDQ-11 by March, 1992. The data were analyzed using the multiple regression analysis (Stepwise multiple Linear regression). Results indicated low level of childhood experiences and high self concept. It also indicated that the childhood abuse experinces predicted 12% of variance in self-concept. In addition, the results revealed significant differences in self-concept in favor of females and pure mathematics specialization area. The results also show gender differences favoring females in emotional abuse dimension, but there were no significant differences in all dimensions of childhood abuse experiences according to the area of specialization (Pure and applied mathematics). Several recommendations were suggested to the specialists in Omani schools to provide psychological intervention to emotionally abused children.
