English abstract
The study is aimed at analyzing the geometry content included in mathematics textbooks of the first cycle of basic education in the Sultanate of Oman. The research questions for this study are:
1. What are the standards which are developed from the NCTM standards for
geometry that should be included in mathematics textbooks of the first cycle of basic learning in Oman (first grade to fourth grade)? 2. To what extent the NCTM standards for geometry are included inmathematics textbooks of the first cycle basic learning in Oman? 3. Does the inclusion of the NCTM geometry standards vary according to the school year (first, second, third & fourth grades)? To answer the above questions, the researcher used a descriptive analytic methodology in which she first translated and listed the NCTM standards for geometry that should be included in the first cycle mathematics textbooks of Omani schools. She then used the list to analyze the actual content of geometry in mathematics textbooks after checking its validity and reliability, using Holsty equation which stands for 0.97. Findings of the study are as follows:
1. The inclusion of the NCTM standards in cycle 1 textbooks varies from few to medium. 2. There are statistical differences in the availability criteria in the first class mathematics textbook as compared to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th classes. 3. There are statistical differences between the inclusion of the standards in the second and third grades mathematics textbooks in favor of the third grades mathematics textbooks, In the light of the above results the researcher made many recommendations. For example, the geometry content in Omani school textbooks should be revised and the authors of the textbooks should receive extra training.
