Prospection’s interest in minerals in Oman first stemmed from archaeological and historical research done by Mr. C. C. Huston, entailing a blending of inter-related disciplines. Ancient copper artefacts (dating back to the Second Millennium) were noted in museums and a possible source of copper was proposed by the very able archaeologist Dr. Geoffrey Bibby. His book, Looking for Dilmun, describes clay tablets, excavated in Ur, which mentioned a twenty-ton copper shipment around 1800 B.C. from “Makan” to Ur. From his archaeological evidence and by deduction, Dr. Geoffrey Bibby proposed the location of Makan and source of the copper to be somewhere in the mountains of Oman. He says, in part, “The cities of Makan will be found in Buraimi and, if Allah wills, in Muscat”.
