Assessments of the validity of the NAO.99b, FES99, TPXO7.1, TPXO6.2, and FES2004 global tidal models for the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman were carried out to select one of them as the optimum model for the region. These models can help to identify the tidal characteristics of the region as well as to determine mean sea level. Eventually, they can be used as a basis for the design of a local tidal model. The evaluation of these models involved comparing the results of the models' tidal analyses with data recorded by tide gauge stations in the ports of Jask, Chabahar, Rajaee, Kangan, Bushehr, and EmamHassan, all situated on the northern coast of the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman. The tide gauge data were analyzed using Institute of Ocean Sciences (IOS) Tidal Package software. Statistical methods were used to obtain the RMS (root mean square) of the amplitudes and the RSS (root sum of squares) of the RMS of the amplitudes and the phases of the four tidal principal components calculated by the models, which were then compared with the amplitudes and phases obtained from tide gauge data. This investigation shows that, of the five global tidal models analyzed, the results of the FES2004 model had the best agreement with regional tide gauge data. This model proved to have the smallest RSS for the RMS of the amplitudes calculated by the models in comparison with values obtained from the IOS software, and this model had the smallest RMS of the differential vectors of the wave functions of the principal components calculated by the models in comparison with values obtained from the IOS software.
