The present study aimed to uncover the extent of the availability of self learning skills in social studies text books in cycle two of basic education in the sultanate of Oman, through answering the following questions :
1.What are the self learning skills that should be provided within social studies text books in cycle two of basic education ? Y-To what extent are the skills of self learning provided within social studies text books in cycle two of basic education ? T Do these skills different in social studies books in cycle two of basic education according to different grades? To answer these questions the researcher prepared the following two instruments, using the descriptive analytic method : A- A list of self learning skills that should be provided within social studies text books in cycle two of basic education, this list was later submitted to team of referees to assess its validity. . B- Analysis form that was derived from the list of self learning skills after it was assessed. The consistency of the form was assured by another analyst. The rate of accordance between the researcher and the analyst was calculated through (Copper) equation. The rate of accordance recorded (11,12%) after the analysis, the study resulted in the following:
1. It was agreed on the list of self learning skills, that should be provided within social studies text books in cycle two of basic education that consisted of (TO) skills distributed over three axis's as follows the first axis's self learning skills related to information searching and it included ) skills, the second axis's skills of self learning related to data organizing and it included (1) skills, the third axis's self learning skills related to using and applying information and it included (19) skills. Y- All self learning skills were included in the list and presented in social studies text books in cycle two of basic education in different rates. T- The third axis's recorded the highest rated (1+,&VX). 4- The second axis's come second (TT,V9%) of availability percentage. o- The first axis's came third with availability percentage (10,72%.) The study results led to some recommendations by the reseasher and he also suggested doing research and other similar studies aiming to recognize the extent of availability of self learning skills and their acquisition by learners in other study grades.
