The start of the Omani arts journalism was associated with the appearance of the specialized arts pages and supplements published by the daily newspapers. In addition, there are two"purely specialized arts magazines. The first is Sinne magazine published by the Omani Cinema Association since 2006. The other, Al Barwaz magazine, started in March 2010 and published by the Omani Fine Arts Association. Moreover, arts content can be found in -different Omani magazines specialized in cultural, social and political fields. The aim of this descriptive study is to explore the characteristics of the arts content in the Omani national daily newspapers, namely Oman and Al Shabiba. Moreover, the study attempts to identify the challenges facing the Arts journalism through unstructured interviews with Omani journalists specialized in arts and Omani artists. The results of the study show moderate interest in arts content which came sixth on a scale of thirteen topics. It was also found that the content related to cinema is highly rated among Arts topics. The most common journalistic patterns used for covering arts content are news and news reports. Local arts content came second in both newspapers. In addition, both newspapers rely on several sources in collecting arts content. Some of these sources are correspondents and reporters, unidentified sources, as well as foreign, regional and international news agencies.
The study indicated a number of challenges facing Omani Arts journalism, including professional, administrational, economic, and socio-cultural challenges. It also presented recommendations for the improvement of the performance of arts journalism in the Omani dailies.
