This study aimed at investigating the degree of including self learning criteria involved in Islamic textbooks at the third and fourth grade of basic education. To achieve this purpose , the study answered the following questions: 1- what are the self learning criteria that should be included in Islamic textbook at the third and fourth grade of basic education in the Sultanate of Oman? 2- to what extent are the criteria included in Islamic text book at the third and fourth grade ? To answer these questions, the researcher used descriptive analytical method and designed the following instruments:
1-A list of self learning criteria that was validated by a panel of experts. 2-An analysis list : it was drawn from the above self learning list. The validity was checked by the researcher and another Master student. The two validity checks 92%. The results of the study can be summarized in the following:
1- A valid list of self learning criteria that should be included in a third and fourth grade Islamic textbook. The list consisted of 61' items distributed in four areas : introduction, objectives, content, and method of evaluation and activities. 2- This self learning criteria was shown to be used at the average level of the third and fourth textbooks. 3- The area of evaluation obtained the high rating among all other areas. Recommendations: It is important to include objective in the introduction of these textbooks . Also more concentration should be placed equally on the practical as well as the cognitive aspects. Moreover, the number of questions that related to the investigation and motivating thinking should be increased . In addition, it has to be a grater connection between activities with out side environment, the researcher also recommended a group of topic for future studies.
