The present research aimed at identifying the linguistic (listening, speaking, reading and writing) necessary for Arabic language student- teachers at colleges for education in Oman and hence evaluating their linguistic performance during teaching practice classes in the light of these skills. To achieve this purpose the following procedure was followed:
1- Preparing a list of the linguistic skills necessary for the student - teachers of Arabic language. The list was submitted to a panel of juries to assure its validity.
2- Preparing an observation checklist for evaluating the linguistic performance of 3-A sample of thirty male and student - teachers in the light of the above mentioned list. female student-teachers was selected from the research population at Salalah and Rustaq Colleges of Education; males from Salalah College of Education and females from Rustaq College of Education. To answer the first question,'What are the linguistic skills necessary for students, teachers of Arabic language at colleges of education in Oman?', the list yielded thirty six sub skills under four main skills: listening with sub- skills, speaking with ten sub-skills, reading with twelve sub - skills and writing with eight skills.
To answer the second question,' What are level of the linguistic performance of student- teachers of Arabic language at colleges of education in these skills?' The observation checklist was administered to the sample of the research. Results displayed the following: a- the level of linguistic performance of student- teachers at colleges of education is intermediate. b- The highest level of performance was in writing skills while the level in listening skills was low.
To answer the third question, 'Does the level of performance differ according to the type of the six and skill (listening, speaking, reading and writing)?"T"test was used to indeacated the significate of the differences between the male and female. The reaslt indeacated no statistically differences between them',and one-way ANOVA was analyzed. Analysis revealed the following: a- There are statistically significant differences between the listening skill and the skill of speaking, reading and writing in favor of the writing skill. b- There are statistically significant differences between the speaking skill and the skills of reading and writing in favor of the writing skill. c- There are statistically significant differences between the skills of reading and that of writing in favor of the writing skill, To answer the fourth question, 'What is the suggested framework for upgrading the linguistic level of Arabic language student-teachers at colleges of education in Oman?', the research adopted the model suggested by Ali Madkour in his research about the future view of preparing and training the Arabic language teacher. He suggested using the integrative system for preparing the teacher. In the light of the research results, the study recommended training trainee- teachers in the skills of Arabic language through microteaching as it helps them to acquire these skills in a practical way. Designing a four year course of linguistic skills for the Arabic language specialization. Finally, the research suggested a number of studies such as evaluating the Arabic language courses tough to student-teachers of Arabic language at colleges of education in Oman.
