This study was aimed to identify the practices of Cycle One
schools' principals in the Sultanate of Oman to improve students'
achievement in TIMSS. The study adopted five dimensions through
which to measure principals' practices in: goals, students, teachers, home,
and community and school building.
A qualitative research design is implemented to achieve the goals
of the study. Six schools' principals were interviewed to collect data.
They have experienced TIMSS 2015 in their schools. The study results
show that principals could adapt a number of practices to improve
students' achievement in TIMSS. They are as follow: raising students'
achievement should be included as a main goal in the school plan with
the participation of school performance development team, monitoring
teachers to verify their teaching methodologies, evaluating students
through class visits, analyzing students' results in mock exams,
motivating both teachers and students with rewards, increasing
communication with parents, preparing school buildings and utilizing its
departments to assist in student learning.
The study proposes several suggestions to improve the
performance of principals of schools. Some of them are: supporting
participant schools financially and morally, regular visits to schools from
the TIMSS teams in the Ministry and enriching teachers who play
significant roles in TIMSS with intensive workshops
