This study examines the emotional chaos in Al-mutanabbi's Poetry through the integration of the rational emotive behavior and the chaos theories. It concentrates on tracking Al-mutanabbi's poetry in various stages of his life as well as on pursuing the different courts he visits to recite his poems. It adopts a systematic analysis methodology which has helped to build a precise vision of the text and its internal structure. It also facilitates the process of analyzing the poems and identifying chaos in Al-mutanabbi's emotions.
The study is comprised of two parts: theoretical and practical. The theoretical part consists of definitions of new terms in various fields of knowledge in literary criticism. For instance, the term "chaos" represents the difficulty of predicting things due to lack of sufficient information about their initiating circumstances. This part also discusses the history of chaos and its characteristics. The term "emotion" has been defined as person's reactions towards different situations in accordance with his/her ways of thinking. Treated also in the study are the historic background of the term and its principles.
The central thesis merges the two terms: emotion and chaos to represent the emotional disorders and their causes in Mutanabbi's poetry. The causes stem from Mutanabbi's own beliefs and thoughts which are concentrated on pride, dignity and ambition. Such beliefs and thoughts have been distinguished by rationality in some occasions and by irrationality in others. For Mutanabbi, the irrational belief is the main cause of his emotional chaos. In other words, beliefs are the only causes behind a person's emotions, not the situations he/she experiences.
The study goes on to describe features of emotional chaos of Mutanabbi's poetry which are manifested in breaking the conventional laws of "standard poetry" drawn by classical theory. Emotional chaos also appears in the incompatibility among both the poems' theme, the emotions it evokes, and the appropriate language to express these emotions. In addition, emotional chaos is prominent in contradiction between different language styles and sentences usage. Moreover, there is conflict in the emotional structure of the same stanzas in some poems and in the external structure of others. It is also clear that emotional chaos can be elicited from both the dominance of self esteem of Mutanabbi in his poems and from the impact of the culture of his time on his poetry. The figurative image in Mutanabbi's poetry occupies a great deal of space with respect to emotional chaos. Although his poetry ends with order, it originates chaos.
