This study investigates the awareness of using authentic assessment (AA) in teaching
among faculty members in the Instructional and Learning Technologies (ILT) department at
Sultan Qaboos University (SQU). In addition, the study aims to evaluate how those faculty
members use authentic assessment and what technologies they employ to support its use.
The study adopts a case study methodological approach through a qualitative document
analysis and interviews. The sample of the study is the faculty members of the ILT departments
at Sultan Qaboos University, teaching in the academic year 2018-2019. Data was collected using
semi-structured face-to-face interviews and document analysis. The findings indicate that the
ILT faculty members are very aware of the use of authentic assessment .In addition, when it
comes to its real use of this type of assessment among the department courses; the responses
from the faculty members indicated a very good level of using AA in the ILT department. In
addition, this research concludes that ILT faculty members extensively use technology to
supporting authentic assessment in their teaching.
It is hoped that this research might encourage the stakeholders at SQU and Oman higher
education institutions to spread the awareness of AA Among their faculty members and ensure
using proper educational technologies to support its successful implementation. It is also hoped
that the study will add to the literature of authentic assessment approaches, especially in the
Omani context. Since there is a lack of research in the topic of the authentic assessment.
