The study aimed to identify the level of vocational identity and uncertainty
among grade-nine students in the Governorate of North Al Batinah in the
Sultanate of Oman, and to investigate any differences that may exist in the
levels of vocational identity and uncertainty due to the variables of gender,
family income, and students birthorder. The study also aimed to explore
the relationship between vocational identity and uncertainty, and if
vocational identity can be predicted from uncertainty. A random sample of
497 students from grade-nine was selected. To achieve the objectives of
the study, the vocational identity status assessment and the uncertainty
response scale were used. The validity and reliability of the two scales were
confirmed. The results of the study showed that the level of vocational
identity among the grade-nine students was high in general, while the level
of uncertainty was average. There were no statistically significant
differences in the level of vocational identity and the level of uncertainty
due to the gender variable, while there were statistically significant
differences in the level of vocational identity and the level of uncertainty
due to the variable of family income. The results of the study also showed
that there were no statistically significant differences in the level of
vocational identity due to the variable of students' birth order, while there
were statistically significant differences in the level of uncertainty due to
the variable of birth order. The results also revealed that there was no
statistically significant relationship between vocational identity and
uncertainty, while the results showed a statistically significant relationship
between two domains of uncertainty and the level of vocational identity.
Vocational identity can be predicted through two domains: desire for
change and cognitive uncertainty. In light of the results, some
recommendations and suggestions were documented.
