This study aims to identify the components of the blue economy in
the Sultanate of Oman, in the period extending from the beginning of
the twenty-first century until the present time, and to shed light on the
related policies directed by the Oman Vision 2040. This is achieved
by answering the following questions:
1- What is the state of the blue economy in Oman?
2- What are the most important environmental and human impacts
that represent challenges to the blue economy in the Sultanate?
3- To what extent do the various ocean economic activities
contribute to supporting the blue economy?
4- What are the government's directions according to Oman Vision
2040 to support and promote the blue economy?
In order to answer these questions, the researcher applied the
DPSIR framework, which focuses on five main aspects (Drivers,
Pressure, State, Impacts and Response). Based on the application
of this methodology, the researcher formed a set of results, the
most prominent of which are:
1- There is an increasing possibility that the coasts of the
Sultanate, especially the coasts of the governorates of South and
North Al Batinah, will be affected by climate change. These
effects are represented by changes in the coastline, and the
sinking of low-lying areas in it. For example, studies revealed
that a one-meter rise in sea level increases the probability of Ras
Al Sawadi being affected.
2- Various human activities play a significantrole in impacting the
blue economy. Evidently, many human transgressions on the
marine environment have been found, such as: overfishing,
illegal fishing, marine pollution and marine waste on coasts and
sea waters, as well as smuggling by sea.
3- The Ministry has issued fishing seasons dedicated to some types
of fish in order to preserve them from extinction and to protect
them from indiscriminate fishing and commercial drift fishing.
