The issue of children's addiction to electronic games is a concern for
families and communities, as the family environment plays a crucial role in
shaping children's behaviors, including their use of electronic games. This
study aims to explore the impact of the family environment on children's
addiction to electronic games among a sample of Second Cycle of Basic
Education – Grades (5 to 9) in the Al-Dakhiliyah Governorate of Oman. The
study examines the relationship between the family environment and
children's addiction to electronic games regarding some demographic
variables (age, sex, and place of residence). Additionally, the study aims to
identify social workers' perceptions of the family's impact on electronic
game addiction and to observe behavioral changes reported by parents for
their children after engaging with electronic games.
This study is conducted within the framework of descriptiveanalytical studies. We collect data using a social survey method from a
random sample of students, social workers, and parents in the Al-Dakhiliyah
Governorate schools. The study utilized various data collection tools,
including a family environment scale, an electronic game addiction scale,
and interview guides for social workers and some parents.
The results of the study indicate a significant inverse correlation at the
(0.05) level between the family environment and children's addiction to
electronic games, with the strongest correlation found in the social climate
dimension compared to other dimensions of game addiction. Statistically
significant differences are also observed between some demographic
variables (sex, age, and place of residence) and children's addiction to
electronic games. In addition, the family security dimension ranks first
among the family environment dimensions in terms of its impact on
children's addiction. Social workers agree that the family environment is the
primary factor in children's addiction to electronic games, and the parents
report notable behavioral changes in their children after engaging with
electronic games
